THOUGHT AND THINK

Entropy as the Oxford Dictionary says, it is a measurement of the energy that is present in a system or process but is not available to do work, a complete lack of order or a way of measuring the lack of order that exists in a system.

So at the first sight Entropy would appeal us as the pure scientific term, so the most of you would tend to close this page as soon as you realise its non suitability to you. But this piece of writing is not another plausible thesis about the very scientific term Entropy but rather it is related to mine and to your day to day life.

Starting with the theory, the First law of Thermodynamics says, ‘The Energy of the Universe is constant’ that is the Energy is neither increasing nor decreasing. Going by this law it is common to think that if the energy is constant so why we hear every day that we are running out of petroleum, be careful in utilising water (a form of energy), switch off the lights when not in use and so on. When energy in the form of water, petroleum, electricity etc. is going to nowhere then why should we bother to use them properly?

See chaos have started coming!

This point is clarified by the Second law of Thermodynamics. This law says that the ENTROPY of the Universe is increasing and it will, no matter what you do. Although the energy of the Universe is constant but the usable amount of the energy is limited. Energy once used becomes increasingly unavailable and what we are left with is the energy which we cannot use for the fruitful purposes. What are these fruitful purposes we all know like sitting in a.c., driving car at its full throttle, taking a Jacuzzi bath with the best sound systems at service and the list is endless. So once we would use all the usable form of energy what we would left with, will be of no use. So the situation is, energy is present because it is constant but it is still unavailable for our fruitful purposes.

What a bizarre situation, isn’t it?

This is what happening around us, one need not to go through a scientific procedure to observe this, just look around to notice this. If you could observe the traffic jamming your way to pass through, if you could see a child begging a penny from you, if you could feel the soot and translucent nature of the air around you, if the heat of the surrounding is unbearable, if you have to rise early to snatch the cooking cylinder from the vendor, if the heap of polythenes are blocking your sewage line, if the stray dogs are creating trouble, if there are increasing number of accidents in your vicinity, if even unwillingly you have to travel on the foot-rests of the buses, if the administration is reluctant to solve your problems, then you have that ‘eye’ to observe this ‘ENTROPY EFFECT’ and believe me its effects are much more daunting than the any special-effects you have ever seen. The list could be enormous but the thing and the need is to inculcate the feel, need to observe and a little bit of care. We are becoming the victims of circumstances rather than the master of them.
